Cavity Prevention Treatments for Children

Cavities are the most common disease in children. The good news is that most of them are preventable, and professional preventive treatments make a real difference when combined with good habits at home.

Why Children Are More Vulnerable to Cavities

Children’s teeth are more susceptible to decay than adult teeth for a few reasons. The enamel on baby teeth and newly erupted permanent teeth is thinner and less mineralized, making it easier for bacteria to break through. The deep grooves in the back teeth trap food and bacteria in places a toothbrush simply cannot reach. And most children, however well they brush, do not yet have the dexterity to clean their teeth as thoroughly as they need to. Diet plays a role too. Frequent snacking, sugary drinks, and foods that stick to teeth all contribute to the conditions that allow cavities to develop.

Professional preventive treatments address these vulnerabilities early and directly, working alongside good oral home care to help strengthen teeth.

Professional Treatments That Prevent Decay

Fluoride Treatment Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria. At each routine visit we apply a professional fluoride varnish to your child’s teeth. It takes only a few seconds and is one of the most effective preventive tools available. The concentration used in a professional application is higher than what you find in toothpaste, which is why an in-office treatment provides an extra layer of protection beyond daily brushing.

Silver Diamine Fluoride Silver diamine fluoride is a liquid treatment applied directly to areas of early decay or high-risk surfaces. It works in two ways: it stops existing decay from progressing and strengthens the surrounding enamel to prevent new cavities from forming. It is particularly useful for young children, children with multiple areas of concern, or any situation where a more invasive approach would be difficult. The main thing to know is that it can cause a dark discoloration on treated decay, which we always discuss with you before recommending it.

Dental Sealants Sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the grooves of the back teeth. They physically seal off the areas most prone to decay and make those surfaces easier to clean. We have a dedicated page on sealants if you want to learn more about how they work and whether your child might benefit.

What to Expect at a Preventive Visit

Preventive treatments are built into your child’s routine visits. There is no separate appointment needed. At each cleaning and exam we assess your child’s cavity risk, apply fluoride varnish, check any existing sealants, and discuss whether any additional preventive measures make sense based on what we see. If we spot an area of early concern we talk through the options with you before making any recommendations. The aim is always to act early, when the least invasive approach is still an option
