How We Approach Different Ages

A lot of parents bring their children in for a cleaning hoping it will be quick and painless. That is a reasonable thing to hope for, and most of the time it is exactly what happens. At Joie Pediatric Dentistry in Ramsey, routine visits are where we build the foundation for your child’s long-term dental health, and where we catch small problems before they become bigger ones.

  • A visit for a two-year-old looks very different from a visit for a ten-year-old. For toddlers and young children, the priority is making the experience positive and building comfort with the routine. Appointments are kept short, we explain things in language that makes sense to small children, and we involve you directly in how the visit goes.
  • As children get older, we start paying closer attention to how the permanent teeth are coming in, whether the bite is developing well, and whether preventive treatments like sealants make sense. We also work with older children directly on their oral hygiene habits, not just their parents

What We Look for Beyond Cavities

Some situations require emergency medical care ratheA dental exam covers more than whether there are any cavities. We look at how the teeth are positioned, whether any baby teeth are being held too long or lost too early, and how the jaw is developing. Early orthodontic concerns are often visible before a child is anywhere near the age for braces, and identifying them early gives families more options.

We also look at the soft tissue: the gums, the tongue, the inside of the cheeks. These areas can reflect what is happening in the rest of the mouth and, sometimes, more broadly in a child’s health
